The Growth Trap That’s Killing Your Profitability
Lately, I’ve had a realisation that I know will resonate with many business owners—especially those who’ve been chasing revenue growth but still feel like profitability is slipping away. You might think, “I’ll be profitable when my turnover hits X,” or “I’ll have enough in the bank when I reach Y.” Sound familiar?
This mindset creates what I call the revenue trap—a belief that more revenue is always the answer. But here’s the reality: scaling without profitability means scaling your problems, not your success. More revenue doesn’t automatically mean more profit.
How to Shift Your Business to Profit First
Instead of growing for the sake of growth, focus on being profitable now—this month, this quarter, this year. Growth should be something you want, not something you need just to keep the lights on. Here’s how:
Stop Over-Investing in Future Growth
If you’re spending on marketing, team members, or masterminds in hope that it will generate growth, step back. Be strategic. Are these investments driving measurable returns now?Audit Your Expenses
Take a real look at your spending. If you’re making £20K a month and only taking £3K in profit (15%), but you could be at £10K (50%) by cutting unnecessary costs, wouldn’t that change everything?Eliminate Non-Essential Costs
Ask yourself: If my revenue stayed flat, what could I cut while still running a high-impact business? Examples include risky ad spend, non-converting marketing channels, and premature hiring.Run Your Business on a ‘Bad Month’ Budget
Base your expenses on a conservative revenue estimate. This ensures that even in slow months, you remain highly profitable. When you do have a great month? That’s just extra cash in the bank!
